Based on researches in the medical field, the long term effect of cigarette smoking served as ticket to an early death but it doesn't mean the smoking doesn't give health benefits at all.

Some Research Based Health Benefits of Smoking

  • Lower Risk of Joint Replacement Surgery

A study conducted by University of Adelaide in Australia revealed that there is a direct correlation between non male smokers and high risk for joint replacement surgery. Posted on July 8, 2011 in Arthritis&Rheumatism, the study reveals that men who smoke for more than 48 years will have 51% less likely to have a joint replacement surgery. This is because the nicotine helps prevent cartilage and joint deterioration.  Joint replacement surgery are common among joggers and obese. Smokers are rare joggers and obese.

  • Lower Risk of Obesity

Smokers are rarely obese. This is because smoking acts as appetite suppressant. Acting as a suppressant, a smoker will have a tendency to have a no taste food and will snack less. Forbes magazine quoted:

  • Delay Onset of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's Disease

Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease both affects the brain functions. The first one refers to the movement of the body such as walking, coordination, etc while the latter refers to the memory functions. Both diseases occur during old age. Recent studies revealed that the onset of these diseases can be delayed when the person is smoking. Evan L. Thacker emphasized that this does not promote smoking but a fact supported by researches and to open the idea that there are health benefits got from nicotine. In their study of people who got the same risk for Parkinson and Alzheimer, smokers have a 73% lower risk compared to 22% lower rick of nonsmokers.

  • Lowers Risk of Death After A Heart Attack

Smokers got lower tendency of dying after a heart attack because Clopidogrel seemed to work better in smokers. It is a a drug used to inhibit blood clots. Korean study in 2009 showed that cigarette smoking activates proteins called cytochromes. It is a protein that infused an active state to Clopidogrel.

There must be some health benefits from cigarettes smoking. This is mainly because it's nicotine content, according to medical researches, gives health effects to smokers. Nicotine is not liable for causing cancer, perhaps the other chemical content of the cigarette. It is naturally safe and non toxic. Though it is addictive, it can't be responsible for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Definitely, it doesn't present hazards in cigarettes.

Though cigarettes smoking can give positive light, it doesn't outweigh the negative effects it can give to smoker and secondhand smokers. That's why non smokers are not encourage to smoke. But for smokers, who can't quit smoking, they are forced to at least reduce consumption of cigarettes and emission of toxic chemicals in the environment.

To cater the need for reduction of cigarette consumption, e-cigarettes or smokeless tobacco arise. It is a battery powered device with nicotine cartridges that vaporize and stimulate the same effect of smoking.  E-cigarette smoking are less dangerous than tobacco smoking. And because of it's small amount of nicotine content, it can still give the same positive effects listed above.

Just to reiterate, we don't encourage anyone to smoke. You must quit but if you can't, you can turn to e-cigarettes. World Health Organization focus on encouraging people to quit smoking rather than making them quit e-cigarette smoking.
