When a person inhales an e-cigarette, the sensor detects the inward flow and then activates a heating element that vaporizes the liquid solution in the cartridge, thus producing the smoking sensation. This solution basically contains nicotine that lets the user feel as if he is really smoking a real cigarette. When the nicotine in the cartridge has been consumed, the user can replace it or have it refilled. At present, e-cigarettes that can be manually activated are now available, as well as sensor-detecting ones. With these models, the users need to press the activation button when they want to charge the heating element in the e-cig before inhalation.

Commonly, e-cigarettes have an LED on the tip. And when the user inhales, the LED is being activated which makes the tip glowing, making it resemble even more to a real cigarette.
